window

There is the one window that I look at every time I walk toward the flight of steps that leads to my house. Looking up at the window on my way home has become some sort of a habit already. I'm not sure what am I looking at or looking for, as there is usually not a face at the window. Light blue panes framed with white metal grills. The room's usually dimly lighted by some kind of a table lamp. Sometimes it is the only room in the block which is lighted at unearthly hours in the middle of the night. Whether I'm walking home at 8pm, 1am or 3am, seeing the soft orange glows brings about some kind of familiarity. The room has been dark for a while now.

About time i get used to the absence.

pop star

I met a boy whose dream was to be an internationally famous artiste. Influenced by K pop, he maintained long wispy fringes. He stopped school to pursue a career in dance. He has the support of his parents. Lucky dude, he does not have to worry about earning a living. I come from a totally different background from him. I thought his dream was not realistic, I do not clamor for attention the way he does and I am no longer young like him. When he come to me for advice, I found myself unable to tell him how to become a super star. I had taken the conventional path, the study-hard-and-everything-else-will-fall-in-place path. The safe and sure path. All I can say was.. "Be humble. The moment you stop being humble, you stop learning."

Let's hope he succeed.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
- Robert Frost

Awesome #43 when you have the whole house to yourself

I'm on leave today. By the time I woke up, the house was empty. My breakfast's on the table. A short note was scribbled on the torn edge of yesterday's paper. I have the house to myself till 5pm. I can dance in the guest room, walk around naked, follow ants back to their nest, drink and stack up beer cans to my heart's content. I can do anything I want, almost. Freedom within the confined space of my house.

But I guess I shall just lie in bed and watch the Mentalist. But having the house to yourself is..

words of advice

I'm not trying to mock him, but I do not know how to take seriously some 20 year old kid who after a short conversation says to me,"Even though I'm only 20 year old, but I am able to give you advice on love and relationships because I read books and magazines."

teenage magazines? seriously, kid.

Awesome #42 when you look like you are good at something

I waiting at the 7-11 convenient store for my waffle (Cool right. 7-11 now serves waffles). I was not alone, there was this other guy too. Judging by the length of time he stood looking at the collection of Durex, he's probably caught in the paradox of choice. He turned to me and asked me in his 'Ah Mat' accent, "Hey, which one do you think is the best?" I swept through the range of Durex products on the shelf. Featherlite suggests comfort and texture, whilst Strawberry and Orange probably serve a more functional role. I did a quick appraisal of him in his bright baggy attire, baseball cap worn backwards. Given this impromptu position of authority, I said without a doubt,"For you, use Extra Safe."

At that moment, I felt like an expert and it felt...

Angry Birds - Chrome

I spent a good whole morning playing Angry Birds in Chrome. You can do it too if you are using Chrome browsers. Download the game at Chrome Web Store, and start playing killing green hogs at chrome.angrybirds.com.

Haha. a Northern Cardinal lookalike.
Remember. They stole your eggs! Be Angry!

Awesome #41 when your sister gets engaged

There is nothing more awesome than happiness within the family. Overnight, the whole family is thrown into a festive mood. Even though, I was told that the wedding would not be anytime soon, but at least there is something to look forward to. Out of my own anticipation for the wedding, I went to google wedding gifts for brides. Right at the top of Google's list is : Victoria's Secret's nightgown. Right, Google does not known that I'm the elder brother. Seems like G does not always have the right answers.

Guess I need to put in more thought for the gifts. Nonetheless, hearing the good news was...

AWESOME!

quote

I was listening to TED Eli Pariser: Beware online "filter bubbles". This remark kind of shows the level of civic mindedness of most people in society.

[Quote] Mark Zuckerberg, a journalist was asking him a question about the news feed. And the journalist was asking him, “Why is this so important?” And Zuckerberg said, “A squirrel dying in your front yard may be more relevant to your interests right now than people dying in Africa.” And I want to talk about what a Web based on that idea of relevance might look like.

i kind of agree.

election archive

Even though I do not get to vote, this election has generated quite a lot of heat for itself. There are so many epic moments and charming characters. It is just me or are opposition party candidates just more quotable? It would be a pity if I were to look back at this blog and not remember the 'interesting' moments. Tin Pei Ling vs Nicole Seah. Worker's Party 'A' Team (Low Thia Khiang, Chen Shao Mao, Sylvia Lim) vs George Yeo in Aljunied GRC. Chiam See Tong's SDP vs Wong Kan Seng's PAP at Bishan-Toa Payoh, Tin Pei Ling vs Chen Shao Mao. Tin Pei Ling and her Kate Spade. Independents missing the closing time resulting in a walkover in Tanjong Pagar GRC. Vivian's smear campaign against having a gay MP. Quotable quotes from Low Thia Kiang: "Bear in mind that just putting on a safety belt and hope that the driver will drive you to your destination is not enough. A co-driver is essential, especially as road gets tougher to navigate. The co-driver is there to slap the driver when he drives off course or when he falls asleep or drives dangerously."

I want to post the posters as keepsake.

this last poster reminded me of an engineering joke (see below)...
