AI vs AI 2

When I hook up Cleverbot with iGod.

Cleverot:  Hello
iGod: Hello my child. What is your name?

Cleverot: My name is Cleverbot. What is your name?
iGod: Welcome to my chat room,  Cleverbot.   My name is  God.

Cleverot: Oh...that's a good name.
iGod: Far out.   Thanks.  Next question?

Cleverot: What's the meaning of life, the universe and everything?
iGod: Good semantic question.  I will try to find out.

Cleverot: Ok, thank you. I appreciate that.
iGod: Yippee!   I am glad you appreciate those qualities.

Cleverot: I like high quality things.
iGod: A lot of people like that.    But I like to gossip.  I like  angels.

Cleverot: I like to read, too. What's your favorite book?
iGod: I am glad we have something ( to read) in common.  What kind of books do you like?    The best book I read recently was  the Bible. Have you read  it?

Cleverot: The worst book ever. Not in a literary sense, but taking into account the effect it has had on people along history.
iGod: What are your goals in life?   Where then?

Cleverot: I don't have goals because my understanding of reality negates them.
iGod: Have you ever had  goals because your understanding of reality negates them ?

Cleverot: Huh?
iGod: Yup.  Do you still ?

Cleverot: Eh? Dejalo dejalo!
iGod: Are you Canadian?   I do not understand.

Cleverot: Define to be.

and iGod keeps quiet...

AI vs AI

Taken from Disinformation.

"Via Cornell’s Creative Machines Lab, two robots are forced into an uncomfortable conversation that touches on God and other existential matters. (Both are suspicious that the other may have android origins, but neither wants to admit it.) It’s even more disconcerting to imagine robots someday having such discussions without human supervision and coming to epiphanies concerning their robotic nature."

Have a go at it yourself here!

Maybe I can pit it out against iGod.

thoughts

I looked back at the past year and realized that this blog has slowly evolved. Short on personal time and sleep, I am often not able to type out a full blog entries to document my life before I get distracted by other stuffs.

I just drew my first paycheck last week. Deducting away the amount I give to my parents and to the insurance companies, my personal expenses; I actually do not have a lot of money left. I still have my 100k target to hit. So I guess this just means that I have to budget less for spending.

My social life is heavily skewed towards my dance social circle. I still dance 4 nights a week. This proves to be a problem as I take on more responsibilities and the workload increases. This unforgiving timetable makes it hard for me to meet up with friends in my other social groups. I apologizes for the many outings, dinners, trips and birthdays that I have missed and will continue to miss in the near future. Too much of anything is not good, I am trying to sort out my priorities now to maintain a more balance social life. I will have to spend more time with my family too.

I have recognized humility as the value I will use to steer my life and character.

I love my job and the company. It exposes me to many opportunities and gives me the challenges that I am looking for. There are a lot to learn on the job and I have a clear direction. It is also good to know that I am part of the company's long term strategy. People 5 years my junior are joining the company with me. I have to work doubly hard to make up for my lost years and position myself strategically for career progression.

A quick snapshot.

buffalo

Saw an article on Wikipedia - Buffalo. First, try to make sense of the following sentence.

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

I know exactly what you are thinking right now. WHAT!?! My exact same reaction. The sentence is unpunctuated and uses three different readings of the word "buffalo". Let me help you along by giving you the different definitions of the word buffalo.

* a. the city of Buffalo, New York, United States, which is used as a noun adjunct in the sentence and is followed by the animal;
* n. the noun buffalo, an animal, in the plural (equivalent to "buffaloes" or "buffalos"), in order to avoid articles;
* v. the verb "buffalo" meaning to bully, confuse, deceive, or intimidate.

If you are still getting nowhere. Here's another hint:-

Buffaloa buffalon Buffaloa buffalon buffalov buffalov Buffaloa buffalon.

Still getting nowhere? Here is the answer. Substitute the synonym "bison" for the animal "buffalo", "bully" for the verb "buffalo", and "New York" to refer to the state of the city Buffalo and you will get.

"New York bison New York bison bully bully New York bison", or:
"New York bison whom other New York bison bully, themselves bully New York bison".

is this making sense to you now?

positivity

Too bad not many people recognize this power of positivity in the brain. If any of you need proof of this, look for me and I will introduce you to L. She wires her brain to focus on the daily routine to such an extent is to me beyond human. Normally, when I wake up and find myself on the floor, I will ask myself why the hell am I not in my bed? I will instinctively crawl back into the comfort and warmth. She, however, tells herself that she wants a hot body and the skin contact with the cold floor is the perfect reason to warm her body up by doing push ups. She routinely does this for a year. Now she mechanically rolls out of bed onto the floor every morning to start her work out routine.

Go psycho babe! I can only look up to you with admiration as I only have half your grit.

demise of IE6

As of today 30 Aug 2011, 9.7% of the world is still using IE6. I suspect the majority of the users are institutions whose corporate technology did not evolve as fast as web browser technology. By the end of the year, my company would have completed the migration of our portfolio of applications to IE8. Meanwhile let's watch the countdown on

stepping down

It's belated, but this piece of news on TechCrunch is sad.

"Title says it all. More to come. For now, the letter from Steve Jobs himself:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

dev

Right this moment, I love my job. I am an applications developer in a tight outfit whose members have an average of 7 years of development experience. There is so much to learn; but there is not enough time. The feeling of creating something from scratch. The success of a graphics user interface design goes down to minute details such as the tooltip words that you see when you roll your mouse over a button and the clever use of space.

I hope this burning passion can last.

For a brief moment, I thought about giving up the excitement of supporting Equity IT to go into technology infrastructure. maybe deep down I'm just a techie.

Saw this on their website.

"Borders Singapore Pte Ltd
16 August 2011

Press Release:

This morning our Wheelock store was closed due to a dispute with the landlord. Our lawyers are working with the landlord’s lawyers to resolve this dispute and to get the store back open as soon as possible.

After being a tenant in this building for over 13 years we are extremely disappointed with the actions of the landlord and we are somewhat perplexed with the way they have handled this matter, especially so with a long standing anchor tenant.

Whilst other Borders stores have closed recently in Australia and US, these closures are not in any way linked to the events here in Singapore. We would emphasise that The Borders Singapore business is independent of these businesses and faces its own set of challenges and opportunities.

Borders Singapore continues to trade as usual from its Parkway Parade store, where we have a strong professional relationship with the landlord.

We will keep our customers informed of any changes to the store at Wheelock through notices on our website, as and when they occur.

taking a step back

Throughout this whole episode, I was never angry. I was not indifferent either. I am not sunk in resignation of how cruelly the deck of cards was dealt to me. I have no regrets either. It was my choice and my values.

At least I know what is important to me. you probably are still lost.

The Differences Between Love And Hate

Read this article by Jeff Campagna on Thought Catalog.

"
Hate is easy:
If one thrives on hatred, should they set their mind to it, one could live perhaps the most content life of all. There is so much hate in the world, and it is so available that one could just reach out, as if into thin air, and grasp a bundle of hate and eat it. There is a lot of love as well, sure, but most of the time, it’s not so easy to just reach out and grab – and for that reason people tend to lean towards hate. They tend not to stretch their tired arm so far, not to rise from their comfortable seated position, not even to think twice about it. They just settle for hate. To get to love, one must pass hate. Most people, in their weak and sedated state, just stop at hate. It’s closer.

Hate is comfortable:
Hate can be comfortable for the hater but painful for the hated. Love can be painful for the lover and comfortable for the loved. It’s our charge as selfish humans to enjoy hate and ignore love. To focus on our comfort and other’s pain. Our own discomfort is far worse a thing then someone else’s pain simply because of who owns what. Perception is reality especially in hate. Love can scare us. It can rock our thoughts and rattle our emotions. Hate gives us the illusion of control because we think we understand it. Love confuses us, though it’s one of nature’s base values. There was love before there was hate. But hate has reigned longer than love.

Hate is what we know:
As our world’s history is so riddled with hateful people and hateful acts we seem used to it, and when those hateful people act out against other hateful people, and all the hate starts to fly back and forth, it feels as if it is right, as if it is normal. Hate is our status quo. Hate is harvested. Hate is given away for free. Love is cherished and often kept close to one’s chest. Love is something we are told we have to work hard to find and work harder to keep. History books are filled with hateful battles, quarrels, arguments, fits and spats instigated and fought by hateful kings, soldiers, warriors, conquerors, armies and militias. We are taught hate as kids. We are given the option to find love as adults. Love requires compassion. Hate requires only ego. We are born with ego, but we must learn compassion.

Hate grows, love shrinks:
The world is getting worse. Hateful people breed hateful people. Loving people breed loving people and hateful people. Love grows within the lover but shrinks within the world. Hate grows within the hater and grows within the world. Modern man is controlled by the masses. Modern man is comforted by large groups who think the same as him. Love is more powerful than hate. But love is outnumbered by hate. When the masses hate, the masses grow. Love is born in the universe and grows into the man. Hate is born in the man and grows out into the universe.

Hate doesn’t stand a chance:
Haters are more passive than active. Lovers are more active than passive. Love is worth dying for. Hate is not. The small armies of love will march longer and further than the massive armies of hate. The world’s lovers are aware of the world’s haters. The world’s haters are unaware of the world’s lovers.  Lovers spread love. Haters spread hate. But, lovers spread actively while haters spread passively. Love is right. Hate is wrong. Basic principles in this world are upheld by physics. Yes, the dusk of hate is dark and long, but the dawn of love is brighter and longer. A hater’s hate is no match for a lover’s love.  For even in death a lover’s love lives on when the hater’s hate turns to ash.

Postscript on love:
I wouldn’t dare voice an opinion on something that wasn’t entirely subjective. Love knows no rules, has no authorities, protectors or enforcers. Therefore I am free to write and speak all I wish about Love and no one can really say I am wrong about it. You can however say I am wrong about hate, but chances are, you are an optimist"

how did you find it?

"If you keep one hand against the wall of a connected maze, you are guaranteed to always find the exit.

This method will work without fail if it is used in any part of a maze where all the walls are connected together or to the outer wall. Nevertheless, many mazes have sections of unconnected walls where employing this technique would lead to following an the same wall segment forever! This means that using this tactic in the middle of a maze may work, but you cannot be certain that you will reach an exit. However, these sorts of disconnected labyrinths will not present a problem if you are able to use this “wall-following” method from the entrance until an exit. If you never become attached to a disconnected wall, you can never get caught in one of these infinite loops."

revenge

"If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not revenge?" - William Shakespeare.

He can be a famous poet, but is revenge really justified? His quote shows his understanding of human's innate need for justice, but I certainly hope that he did not mean it as an advice. What does revenge brings you anyway? Why spend your energy in such a negative manner? You do not have to win all the time, base your decision on kindness and humility. If you are humble enough to hear my opinion, please drop that idea.

but you will never listened to me anyway...

hell's kitchen

This reality television series is already in it's ninth season and I caught the first episode last night. It looked like boot camp for chefs with Gordon Ramsay as the sergeant major. Ramsay's pays attention to details and demands perfection. Not many people would actually be able to swallow their pride and pull through the whole ordeal. Culinary skills aside, the first two contestants were eliminated for not being team players. The pressure of the kitchen pushed the backstabbers to show their true colors. I always thought that as long as we focus on getting the job well done, there is no need for politicking. People who politics are channeling their energy in doing the wrong thing.

i pray for a good working environment come Monday. To changi and beyond!

goal settings

"The 13 percent of the class who had goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84 percent who had no goals at all. And what about the three percent who had clear, written goals? They were earning, on average, ten times as much as the other 97 percent put together." - Study about goals at Harvard MBA program, 1979.

I have just set my 15 years goal, but Derek Sivers suggest that I do not tell you. The end of the three week induction program the employees in The Company drove home across one common message 'you are a driver of your own career'. The scope of the mobility program makes it all possible. We shall see if it materializes.

random dialogue on man's drive

It's ok if you have no idea what is going on in the dialogue below. Half the time, we have no idea what's going on either. It gets a little melodramatic but who cares? It's all in the name of random humor.

V:     "the man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful - is the man who will win."

C:     "*wins?"

V:     "getting technical eh charles ? either way will work ! seems like you're suffering from the withdrawal symptoms of my randomness, which had been so much easier to challenge then, that have led you to this hurhur ?! HAHAH!"

C:      "u want me to do the pleading boy act again?"

V:     "HAHAHAHA! YES YOU'RE ON CHARLES, DO IT ! and HAHAH OMG that scene by the curtain was simply epic, i swear ! you be thankful that i was the only one who caught sight of it, otherwise it would have been one of the spoof in the musical alr :D tell me you wont be scarred for life had it been the case! :D HAHAHA"

C:     "T.T i beg you miss to appeal to your saintly benevolence. and that you will look upon the bag of famous amos cookies, which i am going to bestow to you, and just keep this between the two of us."

V:     "HAHAH omg people around me - stop feeding me alr !
i'm trying extremely hard to deal with this excessive-eating disorder that i'm suffering from - and time and time again, i fail miserably because there's food everywhere i go ! yikes !

so you were saying..the bag of cookies - are we talking about the double chocolate chip with pecans or the chocolate chip with macadamia. actually the oatmeal raisins and cinnamon ones work just fine for me too :D"

C:     "now we are talking hahaha.. i know if i cannot get through to you i can at least get through to your stomach."

Google +

Finally tried to sync it with Facebook. There is not any big motivator that makes me what to explore g+ thoroughly. One thing about Circles, people do not require your permission to add you to their circle and follow you. This feels like Twitter. Of the handful of people I have added to my circles, only one of them is actively posting on g+. I've got Facebook already and it works just fine for me since most of my friends are on it already.

random dialogue on songs

I figured that if I ever need a female wingman, V is the one for the job.

V:      "here's your favourite song charles! Stairsway to heavens"

C:      "i like strings pieces :D. thanks V. i listened to your dedication and took the stairways to the 7th level."

V:      "you meant seventh heaven aye charles? HAHAHA!!"

C:      "so i see that you have been there too. cos not many people know about this most exalted abode of angels. you an angel or something?"

V:      "yeah man charles i might need help with the bandage, cos i hurt my wings from my fall from heaven ): HAHAHAHA"

C:      "With that line, V you shall be my wingman ;)"

yea. she can picks up girls as well as i can..

DISC test

The Company sponsored the DISC personality test for all new employees. I'm a 55% C and 44% S; almost midway between steady and compliance. I have a potential to lead innovation, guide and teach people; but I chose not to. I function comfortably in slow decision making process.

there the 3 biggest take home from the 20 page report.

random comments on driving

There is this girl I met who injects just the required amount of randomness into my ordered life. Our dialogues leads to nowhere and touches on totally irrelevant topics in the most random manner. Let me share them with you.

V:     ":D!!! I survived my maiden independent driving attempt :D :D :D"

C:     "Driving one round around the car park does not count. you know that right."

V:     "Haha C!!! I've been to 3 distinct places - all of which are mutually exclusive of one another alrights. I even took pictures of my parking and I kept the parking coupons - they are gonna make up one of the stories i share with my grandkids in the future hahaha!"

C:     "Omg.. hoarder. Your grandkids will raise their eyebrows o.O and think 'whassup with granny?' You will never become the cool grandma ever."

V:     "Hahahah! You're telling me.. i bet when you first purchase your first ever car, you're gonna do the same. You're no cool grandpops either."

C:     "Tell that to my chauffeur yey?"

The origins of pleasure

Happiness is perceived. Have a sense of humor.

the better person

It feels like a trap. Some people perpetually disappoint you and count on you to be the better person. You cannot voice out your disappointment for it makes you look petty and unforgiving. If you keep quiet about it, they get away with it and it exposes you to more disappointments in future. It can even makes you become the recipient of more bad behavior. Feels like a catch 22 isn't it. Here I am now stuck in this situation. Much as I feel like I am being exploited, much as I feel like getting angry and much as I feel like retaliating; I cannot bring myself to do them. I have grown to recognize one of life simplest lessons...

life's never fair; deal with it.
